GE214 fused silica is widely recognized as the benchmark industrial-grade fused quartz material in the global high-purity quartz market. As a classic product from Momentive (formerly GE Quartz), GE214 dominates high-temperature industrial, semiconductor, lighting and chemical applications thanks to its stable low-OH performance, mature supply chain and excellent cost-effectiveness.
However, many procurement and engineering teams only have a vague understanding of GE214 as a “premium imported quartz material”. Unclear parameter boundaries, application limits and fabrication capabilities often lead to either unnecessary overspending on higher grades, or process failures such as devitrification and equipment breakdown from choosing unsuitable alternatives.
As a professional high-purity quartz fabricator based in Donghai, China’s quartz industry hub, JiuRui Quartz works with official authorized Momentive channels to provide full-range custom fabrication services for GE214 fused silica. In this guide, we break down GE214 from material basics, core specifications, performance advantages, applications and fabrication scope to help you make accurate selection decisions. What Is GE214 Fused Silica?
GE214 is an electrically fused natural quartz material made from high-purity natural crystalline silica, melted via electric arc furnace and processed with deep hydroxyl removal technology. It is the flagship general industrial grade under Momentive’s quartz product line, and the default grade referred to when the industry mentions “GE quartz material”.
Its core positioning is the cost-performance benchmark for industrial high-purity quartz: it delivers performance sufficient for over 80% of high-temperature, corrosion-resistant and cleanroom applications at a much lower price than optical-grade or synthetic-grade quartz. With large global production capacity and a mature supply chain, it is the first choice for mass-produced industrial equipment.
Note: GE’s quartz business was acquired by Momentive Technologies. The industry still commonly uses the traditional “GE214” name; it refers to the exact same product.

Core Advantages of GE214 Fused Silica
1. Outstanding High-Temperature Stability From Low OH Content
This is GE214’s most competitive advantage, and the key reason it outperforms other natural quartz grades in the same tier. With OH content controlled below 5ppm via deep dehydroxylation, it resists devitrification, foaming and deformation during long-term operation above 1100℃, maintaining structural strength far longer than standard high-OH quartz. It is the first choice for long-term thermal components like furnace tubes and quartz boats.
2. Excellent Cost-Effectiveness
Compared to GE124, premium Heraeus grades and synthetic quartz, GE214 offers significant price advantages while covering over 80% of industrial use cases with no performance waste. For mass production equipment and standard processes, GE214 delivers the highest return on investment.
3. Mature & Reliable Supply Chain
As the world’s most widely adopted industrial quartz grade, GE214 has large production capacity, abundant stock and mature global distribution channels. It does not suffer from the long multi-month lead times common with premium grades, and can reliably support stable delivery for bulk production orders.
4. Excellent Fabrication Compatibility
GE214 has uniform material properties and low internal stress, making it compatible with nearly all quartz fabrication processes: cutting, grinding, polishing, welding, drilling, bending. It delivers high fabrication yield and easy dimensional control, meeting requirements from standard industrial to precision grades. See our precision grinding capability

FAQs About GE214 Material Selection
1. What is the difference between GE214 and ordinary quartz glass?
The core gaps are purity, OH content and high-temperature stability. Ordinary quartz typically has SiO₂ purity below 99.9% and OH content of several hundred ppm, prone to rapid devitrification during long-term high-temperature use. GE214 is 4N5 high-purity deep-dehydroxylated material, with 3x longer high-temperature service life and minimal impurity precipitation risk.
2. When should I upgrade to GE124 instead of using GE214?
Upgrade to GE124 if your application has strict requirements for internal bubbles, striae and optical homogeneity (e.g. optical windows, high-precision imaging, high-cleanliness semiconductor processes). For purely structural and high-temperature components, GE214 is fully sufficient.
3. How to verify authentic GE214 material?
There are counterfeit products on the market using ordinary quartz GE214. Verify via three points: ① Request original factory traceability documentation; ② Test OH content (GE214 < 5ppm; ordinary quartz is much higher); ③ High-temperature testing (ordinary quartz devitrifies rapidly with long-term 1100℃ exposure). JiuRui Quartz sources all GE214 material from official authorized channels, with traceability documents available and material verification supported.
4. Is GE214 suitable for food contact applications?
GE214 has extremely low impurity content with no harmful substance precipitation, and is suitable for food and drinking water contact applications, meeting relevant food safety standard requirements.
